What is Advocate for dogs and cats?

Advocate spot-on is essentially same product as Advantage Multi, which is known by different names in different parts of the world. It is produced by the same manufacturer, Bayer, and contains the same active ingredients.

Available for both dogs and cats, Advocate is a convenient once-a-month treatment that protects your pet from both internal and external parasites.

When applied as directed, Advocate spot-on prevents heartworm, and controls flea infestations, ear mites,roundworms and hookworms. It also treats whipworms, lice and sarcoptic mange in dogs, and treats lungworms in cats.

Is Advocate suitable for my pet?

Advocate spot on is available in both canine and feline formulas. Advocate may be used on dogs and puppies from 7 weeks, weighing at least 2.2 pounds (1 kg). It may be used on cats and kittens from 9 weeks, weighing at least 2.2 pounds (1 kg).

Advocate has not been tested as safe for use on pregnant or lactating animals.

Dosage Schedule

Advocate is applied once a month as a topical treatment, with the dosage based on your pet’s weight. It is important that you only use Advocate products on the animal for which they are intended – do not use Advocate for Dogs on cats, or Advocate for Cats on dogs.

Advocate for Cats

Apply the entire pipette as a single dose. Animals of different sizes require different modes of application to ensure the product is evenly distributed, so it is important to follow the instructions on the packet carefully.

What are the side effects of Advocate?

It is important to not that dogs and cats treated with the same dosage of Advocate may experience different side effects.

The most common side effect reported is temporary hair loss at the site of application. Less common side effects include transient behavioural changes such as lethargy, agitation, and loss of appetite.

What precautions must be taken?

  • For topical use only.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after use.
  • Do not allow treated pets to groom each other after application.
  • Do not use on dogs under 7 weeks of age.
  • Do not use on cats under 9 weeks of age.
  • Do not use on dogs or cats weighing less than 2.2lbs (1 kg).
  • The safety of Advocate on pregnant of lactating animals has not been established.

How effective is Advocate (Imidacloprid, Moxidectin)?

Brief contact of the animal with water on one or two occasions between monthly treatments will notsignificantly reduce the efficacy of the product. However, immersion in water directly after treatment may reduce the efficacy of the product.
